Flags Afloat 1993 is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Australia Day where it all began - on Sydney Harbour.

This spectacular aquatic parade will start in Rose Bay at 6.30pm on Tuesday, January 26, and proceed under the Harbour Bridge to Darling Harbour where boat crews can enjoy the Australia Day entertainment and spectacular fireworks display.

Vessels of all shapes and sizes can join in the fun. The parade will include notable ships Young Endeavour, Kay Cottee's First Lady, and the Bounty.

A 30ft miniature working model of the liner Oriana, a 35ft DC-3 airliner on a barge and a Red Cross hospital ship with authentically-dressed nurses serving Red Cross food parcels are just some of more than 800 entries expected to take part.

No official registration is required but entrants must fly an Australian flag and are encouraged to decorate their vessels and dress up to compete for prizes.

The idea for a Flags Afloat parade on Sydney Harbour was conceived in 1989 by the Australia Day Council who sought to create a community event which allowed boat owners and spectators the chance to take part in the Australia Day festivities on the harbour.
