The Danube has been an important waterway for goods traffic ever since Roman times. The town of Grein lies at what was once the most dangerous spot on the Danube. Navigators risked life and limb tackling a number of fearsome whirlpools caused by underwater rocks. The biggest barge, the Kelheimer (roofed for grain transport), was up to 40 metres long and six metres wide, and was drawn by teams of horses on either side of the river.
